Who is Rob Fillmann?
My art story began later in life. After 20 years of teaching high school physics, in my 40’s I started watching videos of artists painting on YouTube. “I wonder if I could learn to do that?”
Beginning with a cheap watercolor set, I started copying other artists’ works and reading and watching anything and everything I could get my hands on. Hundreds of hours of practice, failure, and trial and error ensued.
When my brother challenged me to draw daily for Inktober, consistent discipline began to produce notable growth. I have always loved learning and I feel as though a whole new world has opened up to me!
As a follower of Jesus, I have come to a deeper appreciation for the beauty of creation, whether in the grace and expressiveness of the human figure or the colors at the seaside and vibrant life in animals. Being made in the image of God, it is natural to walk in His footsteps by creating art to display truth and beauty, just as He did in His created world.
As a science teacher, my eyes have been opened to astounding connections between artistic and scientific endeavor. As Peter M. Brant observed: “Art and science have so much in common - the process of trial and error, finding something new and innovative, and to experiment and succeed in a breakthrough.”
God willing, I will be able to continue to grow and develop as an artist and create scenes of beauty and truth for years to come.
